Volcanic terrain holds almost no chlorophyll, so in near-infrared it stays black — basalt, ash, scree. What survives on it does not. Moss and dwarf willow return the strongest infrared signal in the landscape, and the living skin of the lava field renders as ember-red against rock the sensor reads as night. These are documents of where life has managed to take hold.
